Results Belgian BBG May 6 & 7, 2017

In the Belgian BBG five games were played on Saturday. The Brasschaat Braves beat the Deurne Spartans 2-1 in game one, but lost the second 0-12. The Royal Greys and LLN Phoenix split a doubleheader. The Borgerhout Squirrels edged past the Mortsel Stars for a win on Saturday and celebrated a lopsided win on Sunday.

Results Euro Interleague Baseball April 6 & 7, 2017

The Euro Interleague Baseball continued this past weekend. In Pool A Olimpija Karlovac and Apollo Bratislava split a two-game set. Zajcki Ljubljana swept the Angels Trnava. Nada SM Split and Beograd 96 shared wins in their two-game series.

In Pool B the Budapest Reds downed BC Vojvodina 11-1. BK Zagreb cruised past Jezica Ljubljana in both ends of a doubleheader.

Bologna replaces Ramon Garcia with returning Raul Rivero

Unipol Bologna is bringing back Raul Rivero. The right-hander had signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants this past winter. But the dream of a big professional career didn’t come true and he is returning to the Italian Baseball League. He replaces Ramon Garcia on the roster of the reigning IBL champion. Rivero first pitch for Bologna in 2013.

Results Baseball League Austria May 6 & 7, 2017

In the Baseball League Austria the first game day with interleague matchups between the Eastern and Western Divisions was scheduled, as all ten teams were in action. Well, except for the Dornbirn Indians and Traiskirchen Grasshoppers, which saw their doubleheader being postponed. The Athletics Attnang-Puchheim swept the Vienna Wanderers. The Vienna Metrostars and the Stock City Cubs also celebrated two-game weekends. The Feldkirch Cardinals and Diving Ducks Wiener Neustadt split.

In the British National Baseball League four games were played on Sunday. The Essex Arrows stunned the London Mets with a two-game sweep in Town Mead Ballpark. The Herts Falcons and London Capitals split a twin bill.

Results Swiss Nationalliga A May 6 & 7, 2017

In the Swiss Nationalliga A three of the scheduled six games were played due to rainy weather. On Saturday the Zurich Challengers and Sissach Frogs split a doubleheader. On Sunday the Zurich Barracudas downed the Wil Devils 16-9 in game one, but saw game two being rained out as well as the twin bill between the Lucerne Eagles and Bern Cardinals.

Gift Ngoepe becomes first African Player in MLB

Gift Ngoepe made history on Wednesday night as the first African-born player to appear in a Major League game.

Ngoepe had a hit and drew a walk in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ win over the Chicago Cubs.

“I thought about where I’ve come from, making the journey from South Africa to pursue my dream of playing in the major leagues someday,” Ngoepe said. “I thought about the struggles of being in the minor leagues for 8½ years and then to finally get up here and get a hit in my first at-bat. The whole thing was just awesome. That’s the only word I can think of to describe it. It was awesome.”

Clint Hurdle pulled a very early double-switch, bringing Ngoepe, 27, off the bench to play second base in the top of the fourth inning.

“I told myself not to cry, because I’m in the big leagues and I’m a big guy,” Ngoepe said. “Francisco Cervelli hugged me, and I could feel my heartbeat through my chest. It was emotional, and I had to fight back the tears.”
