Successful sport year of the Ukrainian “BioTexCom” baseball club!

Today, the former “KNTU-Yelisavetgrad” baseball team, which represents Ukrainian city Kropyvnytskyi, is known as “BioTexCom”.
One of the best Ukrainian baseball clubs has started a new life under the sponsorship of BioTexCom medical center for human reproduction. Name changes don’t affect the success of Ukrainian baseball players. This year “BioTexCom” team once again became the undefeated champion of Ukraine and Cup holder. All these years the team has been showing great results under watchful eyes of honored coaches of Ukraine Yuri and Oleg Boiko.
“BioTexCom” team became the winner of the Ukraine Baseball Championship 2017. But it is not the only cause for rejoicing. Sponsor has taken the team under his financial wing. Center for Human Reproduction, which is very popular among European patients, supports Ukrainian baseball players and roots their game.
It is to be recalled that the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) announced Ukraine will become the host country of the “European baseball championship” that will take place from 23 to 29 of July 2018. Ireland will be another host country of the tournament.
Thus, currently financial backer of the “BioTexCom” team has initiated and funded reconstruction of the main stadium in Kropivnitskiy city.
It must be noted “BioTexCom” is one of the strongest baseball clubs among the Ukrainian teams. During the last 23 years team has won the Ukrainian Championship for twenty-two times! Athletes didn’t always have an opportunity to attend international competitions. It was due to the lack of funding, sports equipment and bad stadiums for training at home. Now, having support of sponsor, the team’s aims and results will be higher! Watching the “BioTexCom” team games it can be confidently said – to be continued!

The origin of baseball in Odessa

Stanislav Bakan is considered to be a kind of godfather of baseball in Odessa region (South Ukraine). His priceless contribution to the development of this game was firstly seen in Illichivsk city, and in some time baseball became popular in Odesa.

Despite the public's skeptical attitude toward this American game, baseball teams were increasingly established one after another. The first team was formed in 1989 and consisted of fifteen former handball players. Young sportsmen with a great interest got to know useful information using Cuban textbook. Stanislav Bakan received it during the sports congress that took place Moscow. Thus Ukrainian athletes had an opportunity to learn the rules of the overseas game. In addition, they even started to learn English in order to understand the terminology of the game better.

Equipment for baseball players was sewn in local workshops, and beats were made on lathes. The first professional baseball equipment players have got by a lucky chance. Once, Japanese vessel stopped at one of the Odesa’s seaports. The crew turned out to be baseball fans. So, Japanese sailors played baseball while they were at the port, and leaving Odesa accidentally left equipment there. After that case, equipment was purchased centrally, ordering from abroad.
After a while, players from Odesa began to take part and placed in the championships of the USSR. And in 1993, the Odesa team "Illichivets" won the baseball Cup of Ukraine.

Soviet period of Odesa baseball ended in 1993. The revival of the game in Odesa fell on the 2000s. A youth team was founded in the city, which later became a member of the Ukrainian Baseball Federation. According to one of Odesa baseball coaches, Georgy Gus, three generations of baseball players have already grown in Odesa city.
Today baseball has been successfully developing in Odesa. Some baseball players even managed to become a part of the Ukrainian national baseball team. And as of baseball fields, first modern baseball field was built just in Illichivsk city, the city where Odesa baseball takes its origins.

WBSC’s concept received Peace and Sport Awards nomination

A new urban/street game concept recently launched by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has been named among three nominees for the Peace and Sport Award in the category of Sport made Simple.

WBSC’s new baseball/softball street concept aims to address and expand access to sport in underserved and diverse communities, and become a catalyst for social interaction, sharing, respect and prevention of violence, where resources or equipment are challenges.

Peace and Sport has put a special focus on “Sport Innovation for Social Transformation” as a theme of the awards. The urban baseball/softball game requires only a rubber ball and fair play. The simplification of the major baseball/softball disciplines targets a fast-paced, fun, no-cost game and learning/social activity.

“WBSC is humbled and honored to be among the excellent nominees of this year’s Peace and Sport Awards,” – said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “Baseball and softball have been enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people around the world for over 100 years, so we have been specifically focused on creating a fresh, new discipline that serves as an easy-to-access tool that provides similar social and sports development benefits, but with a smaller, simpler version of the game”.

WBSC representatives will be on hand at the 10th Peace and Sport Forum in Monte Carlo, Monaco, where the winner of the 2017 Sport Made Simple Award will be announced on 7 December.

10 Great Baseball Magazine Covers. Part 2

We continue to talk about our favorite baseball magazine covers!

1. “Time”, September 22, 1947. Illustration of Jackie Robinson by Ernest Hamlin Baker. Robinson was the first African American Major League Baseball player of the modern era when he broke the color line playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He was named Rookie of the Year that year, and went on to win the MVP title in 1949. Robinson may also have been the first African American to appear on the cover of Time magazine.

2. “Esquire”, July 1966, design by George Lois. “What’s Joe DiMaggio doing with himself these days?” asked the cover headline. That’s Lois posed as Joltin’ Joe in Yankee Stadium.

3. “Sports Illustrated, June 22, 1970. Photograph by Neil Leifer. Tony Conigliaro was a right fielder for the Red Sox, who led the American League in home runs with 32 in 1965. In 1967 he was hit by a pitch on his left cheekbone in a game against the California Angels. Although his eyesight was permanently damaged, he made a comeback a year and half later.

4. “Sports Illustrated, April 13, 1964. Left-handed pitcher Sandy Koufax played for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1955-66. He pitched four no-hitters in his career, and won the National League Cy Young award in 1963, 65, and 66 by unanimous votes. Born in Brooklyn, the two-time World Series MVP famously did not pitch game 1 of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur.

5. “Sports Illustrated”, August 21, 1995, marking the death of New York Yankee Mickey Mantle. The Mick played his entire 18-year career for the Yankees, winning three Most Valuable Player awards, 16 All-Star nods, and seven world championship rings. “The Natural” (1984)

“The Natural” is a 1984 American sports drama film adaptation of Bernard Malamud’s 1952 baseball novel of the same name, directed by Barry Levinson.
The film, like the book, recounts the experiences of Roy Hobbs, an individual with great “natural” baseball talent, spanning decades of Roy’s success and his suffering.
Nothing was going to stop Roy Hobbs from fulfilling his boyhood dream of baseball superstardom. 14-year-old Hobbs fashions a powerful bat from a fallen oak tree. He soon impresses major league scouts with his ability, fixing his extraordinary talent in the mind of sportswriter Max Mercy, who eventually becomes instrumental in Hobb’s career. But a meeting with a mysterious woman shatters his dream. Years pass and an older Hobbs reappears as a rookie from The New York Knights. Overcoming physical pain and defying those who have a stake in seeing the Knights lose, Hobbs, with his boyhood bat, has his chance to lead the Knights to the pennant and to finally fulfill his dream.

The strangest inventions in baseball history. Part 5

This is the last part of the strange innovations series!

"Electric base-ball register" (John M. Humphreys, 1903)
Most baseball patents are simply oddities, little detours lost to history. John Humphreys' idea, though, was straight out of a sci-fi novel. Just look at it:

Humphreys, like O'Neill before him, wanted to come up with a way to remove what he viewed as the game's "great defect – when the umpire is often enabled to practically decide the game."

Rather than anything so primitive as a bell in a base, though, he had a much grander idea: an entire electric signal system. His invention would include a series of circuits set up across the infield that would send electric currents whenever a fielder had caught a ball.

Unsurprisingly, Humphreys' system was a bit too convoluted to ever gain widespread popularity.

The strangest inventions in baseball history. Part 4

We continue to talk about strange innovations series.
“Base-ball base” (John C. O’Neill, 1875)
First-base umpires have a pretty tough job. They have to keep their eye on both the foot of a fast-moving runner and small white ball being whipped around the infield, and sometimes their margin for error is razor thin.
And it’s also why, back in 1875, John C. O’Neill came up with a new idea for a baseball base: Put a bell inside of it:

The moment the base was touched by a runner, the bell would sound, providing clear evidence to help the umpire make his call. As O’Neill explained: “In place of the bell mechanism, a sounding whistle, electrical connection, or any other suitable enunciating device may be employed, which indicates clearly and positively, without chance of error, the exact moment when the base is touched by the runner, so as to form a very useful and reliable device for base-ball players.”

The strangest inventions in baseball history. Part 3

We continue to talk about strange innovations series.
“Base-ball catcher” (James Bennett, 1904)
Catchers initially wore no real equipment at all. But as the game evolved and more and more and in 1904 James Bennett thought he had the solution for all of the catcher’s problems:

He’d devised a wire cage, worn on the chest in lieu of a glove, which would catch each pitch and protect the catcher’s hands until he had to throw the ball back to the pitcher.
As you can see from the diagram above, it was quite the contraption: The cage was reinforced on all sides with wood, and springs at the back protected the catcher’s chest from the blow of each pitch. Once the ball passed through the open front end, it closed automatically, and an opening at the bottom of the cage would drop the ball into the catcher’s hands

Organized by country, this heavily researched book delves into the history of baseball in 40 nations, describing not only the efforts to spread the game but also the culture of baseball unique to Europe. Appendices cover topics from major leaguers who have played in European domestic leagues to a glossary of baseball terms in seven European languages.

“I played with a false beard”. The story of a woman who won MLB legends

Only one baseball game was enough to input Jackie Mitchell in the baseball history.
The general manager of “Chattanooga” signed a 17-year-old girl to participate in an exhibition game against the legendary “New York Yankees” team. The game was held on April 2, 1931.
The reputation of the team and woman’s participation in traditionally male sport attracted about 17,000 fans. Crowded stadium busted into applause when tiny Jackie appeared on the field in plus size uniform.
Before the game started, Mitchell refreshed her make-up, causing an ironic smile of her teammates.
“I even doubted she was able to throw the ball,” – commented after the game baseball legend Babe Ruth.
At first, Babe Ruth was surprised when he missed Jackie’s first pitch. However, second ball took him apart. Ruth was so impressed that even asked judges to check the ball. The ball was fine, and after a third missed ball Ruth threw a bat and went to the bench.
Ruth was changed with Lou Gehrig – the best baseball player of the 20th century. But he only repeated fiasco of his predecessor and missed three pitches. The crowd chanted “Jackie”. There was no doubt, the girl became a sensation. In the fifth inning, Mitchell complained of pain in her hand and was replaced by another pitcher.
On that day, the “New York Yankees” team won 14-4, but for the players, the victory was equivalent to defeat.

The Mental Game Of Baseball

How important do you think your mental approach is to your baseball performance? If you are a high-level player, you know it is very, very important.
Bill Cole, a leading authority on sports psychology, peak performance, mental toughness and coaching, is founder and CEO of William B. Cole Consultants, a consulting firm that helps sports teams and individuals achieve more success. He is also the Founder and President of the International Mental Game Coaching Association, an organization dedicated to advancing the research, development, professionalism and growth of mental game coaching worldwide.
You know mental toughness in baseball is huge. I don’t like to put percentages on it, but you would probably agree that it is critical to your sustainable success.
When I was the Sport Psychology Coach for the Stanford Baseball Team they were ranked number one in the United States. We worked on mental toughness every day. We also worked on focus, mental preparation and building and maintaining routines and mental recovery strategies.
This article gives you five mental game of baseball strategies I used with the Stanford Baseball Team that you can use right away in your own game.
1.Learn To Control Your Focus
The most important part of the mental game is attentional control. Where you place your focus, in what way, and for how long is key. You need to learn how to choose the appropriate attentional cues so you keep your mind tuned in, not out. The mental game of baseball helps you know what these cues are.
2. Keep Your Mind In The Here And Now
Good baseball is played one pitch at a time. Do that and your mind stays in the moment, the now. One way to facilitate that is to have breath focus. The mental game of baseball helps you learn how to find your breath, track it, and allow it to center and focus you.
3. Stay Poised And Patient
You want to play aggressive baseball, but you also need to remain self-aware, and tuned in to what is happening around you. This is vital to being a plugged in player who makes things happen. The mental game of baseball helps you develop this fine-tuned personal awareness.
4. Develop Confidence And Self-Belief
If you don’t believe in yourself, who will? Everyone around you can tell you how good you are, but if you discount this encouragement, it will never enter your head and heart. The mental game of baseball helps you build an inside-out foundation of self-approval so your confidence flows.
5. Use Mental Rehearsal
Get a competitive advantage with your mind by playing the game in advance, using visualization. Go to the movies in your mind and mentally rehearse what you will be doing in competition. You can plan for contingencies, problems, or map out your strategy and see yourself winning before you actually do it. The mental game of baseball helps you use your imagination to great effect.
When I was at Stanford University we had a belief in our power, and in our destiny. The head coach would get up before a game and ask everyone, “You are about to go out and play in a major college baseball competition. Is there any other place you would rather be? Does it get any better than this?” The guys would then realize that it doesn’t get any better than playing the game you love. The mental game of baseball helps you realize this fundamental, game-altering truth.
I want you to succeed mightily in your baseball career. I want you to reach all of your baseball potential. The mental game of baseball can help you do that in a big way.

MLB to Donate $1 Million to Support Relief and Recovery Efforts in Puerto Rico and Mexico

Major League Baseball announced a $1 million contribution to assist communities impacted by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the earthquake in Mexico.
MLB’s contribution is being directed to immediate relief and long-term rebuilding efforts through a variety of organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Project C.U.R.E., The U.S. Fund for UNICEF and more nonprofits to be named later.
Additionally, MLB will fund travel for physicians and other medical personnel as part of a special effort to provide direct medical assistance to affected communities.
Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said: “These devastating natural disasters have deeply affected the Baseball Family. Players from Puerto Rico and Mexico are an important part of the past, present and future of our game. We hope that our contribution will aid immediate and ongoing efforts during this critical time and the long-term recovery for the people of Puerto Rico and Mexico.”

“Ballplayer: Pelotero” (2011)

Ballplayer: Pelotero is a documentary film focusing on two Dominican Republic Major League Baseball prospects in 2009, Miguel Angel Sanó and Juan Carlos Batista.
The film is directed by Jonathan Paley, Ross Finkel and Trevor Martin, produced by Bobby Valentine.
The documentary follows young baseball players in the Dominican Republic who aspire to the major leagues.
Two top baseball prospects in the Dominican Republic face fierce competition and corruption as they chase their big league dreams. Hard-hitting sports doc examines the darker side of the recruitment of young baseball players in the Dominican Republic for the major leagues.
There is some background of which you may be unaware. Dominicans represent a staggering 20% of the professional baseball players in the United States, which accounts for the tremendous presence that Major League Baseball has in that tiny island country.
The potential for chicanery is rife, with players frequently lying about their ages, falsifying their identities, and rampantly taking steroids and other illegal substances. In this case, what starts out as an inspirational tale of two young hopefuls quickly becomes a backstage drama in which both of their potentially budding baseball careers become mired in controversy.
So this film is really worth seeing. Even if you are not a huge baseball fan!

The strangest inventions in baseball history. Part 2

We continue to talk about strange innovations series.

"Baseball cap with interchangeable logos" (Richard C. Soegel, 1996)

Everybody has their favorite team - the one you grew up with, the one that you'll be loyal to forever. But what if your heart is big enough for two teams? What if your favorite team has been eliminated, and you want to devote yourself to another cause for the rest of the season? Well, then this hat is for you:

The idea is simple: Per Soegel's patent application, it's "a baseball cap configured to permit different logos to be interchangeably positioned on the cap." The logos themselves are outfitted with a hook fastener to allow for easy removal and application - if you'd like your Yankee cap to suddenly morph into a Rangers cap, just take one logo off and swap another on.
