Baseball Australia is proud to announce the coaching staff that will lead Team Australia at the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Team Australia’s coaching staff is littered with decades of Major League Baseball experience, and is one of the most experienced coaching staff at the World Baseball Classic.

Jon Deeble – Manager

One of the highest profile figures in Australian Baseball, Deeble leads Australia for the fourth time at the World Baseball Classic. Deeble took Australia to a Silver Medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics as well as overseeing the Australian team that defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks at the 2014 MLB Opening Series. Deeble spent 2016 as heavily involved as ever in national team programs, with the World Baseball Classic Qualifier as well as a coach of the Silver medal winning U23 World Cup team.

Tony Harris – 3rd Base Coach

Another long-time member of the national team setup, Tony Harris returns for his fourth World Baseball Classic. Harris’ roles have varied in his 17 years involved with the national team, including On-Field Coordinator at three World Cups. Harris was an integral part of the National Team setup in 2016, having coached at the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifier, 2016 Honkbalweek and the 2016 ABL All-Star Game. Harris also led the U23 World Cup team to a silver medal at the 2016 World Cup in Mexico.

Michael Collins – 1st Base Coach

At 32 years of age, Canberra Cavalry manager Michael Collins has gained experience beyond his years in various roles with the Australian National Team and in US Minor League Baseball. Having reached AAA-level as a player in 2009, Collins was immediately touted as a manager, and took control of his first Minor League team as a 27 year old. Collins led the Canberra Cavalry to the 2012/13 ABL Championship as well as a historic title in the 2013 Asia Series.

Craig Shipley – Bench Coach

After making his MLB debut in 1988, Craig Shipley has become one of the most influential and well-known figures in Australian baseball. Shipley currently is based in the US and holds the prestigious role of Special Assistant to the GM at the Arizona Diamondbacks. A member of the 2004 silver medal winning Athens Olympic baseball team, Lloyd has spent time at the highest level both as a player and a coach and continues his time with the Australian National Team following the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in February 2016.
Phil Dale – Pitching Coach
After starring as a player in the Australian Baseball League, Phil Dale returns to Team Australia as the Pitching Coach. Dale began his tenure as Pitching Coach at the 1999 Intercontinental Cup, where Australia claimed the Gold Medal. Since then, Dale has been the Pitching Coach at the last three World Baseball Classic’s.

Kevin Jordan – Hitting Coach

After serving as the Hitting Coach for Australia’s 2016 Honkbalweek campaign in The Netherlands, Kevin Jordan will make his return to Australia’s coaching staff for the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Jordan was a feature in the Philadelphia Phillies infield for six years after making his debut in 1995 and has spent time as a hitting coach in the Phillies organization. Jordan was a part of Jon Deeble’s staff at the 2016 ABL All-Star game and the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifier, and is a career 258 hitter in the MLB.

Andrew Graham – Assistant Coach

The newest member of Team Australia’s coaching staff for the World Baseball Classic is NSW native Andrew Graham. Graham spent four seasons in the Detroit Tigers Minor League system where he reached AAA level. Graham also played for the Sydney Blue Sox between 2010-2012. Graham has had significant experience playing on the international stage, with three consecutive World Cup appearances between 2005 and 2009, as well as playing for Australia at the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic.

MLB Commissioner talks about Olympics, Future of WBC IBB Rule Change coming for 2017

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred held another press conference on Tuesday in Arizona. During the Q&A he lamented that the MLBPA is blocking a couple of proposed rule changes to try to speed up the game. However, he also emphasized that the extra-inning rule only will be used in development leagues. Meanwhile other rule changes will now be prepared for the 2018 season, which can be implemented without the approval of the players. One change is rumored to be coming after all already in 2017, a new rule for intentional base on balls. Similar to softball an intentional walk would be simply signaled from the dugout without pitches being thrown.

Besides rule changes Manfred also talked about the Olympics and the future of the World Baseball Classic:

“I intend to keep the WBC alive and growing as long as I’m Commissioner. The WBC serves two really, really important purposes, I think purposes that are crucial to the future of the game. One is the internationalization of the sport. It’s great to have an opportunity for some of our very, very best players to play in Korea, Japan, Mexico. That’s outstanding. It’s important for growing the game.
“Secondly, given our status currently with respect to the Olympics, the money that the WBC funnels into federations that they can use for development is crucial to the grassroots growth of the game in those countries. As much as I love the event, and I do love the event, it’s those two purposes that make me committed to it going forward.”
“With respect to Tokyo and the Olympics, we have yet to have a description from the federation or the Olympic committee as to exactly what they envision for baseball in 2020,” Manfred said. “Absent that description, a detailed description, how many games, how many days, how many players, I’m just not in a position to tell you what this issue will take.”

Baseball, Wine, and the Next “Italian Baseball Superstar”

Mark Teahen is coming out of retirement to play for Tommasin Padua in Italy. Retired since a final push at 2014 Spring Training, Teahen is arguably the highest profile player to every sign with an Italian Baseball League club.
Mark and his wife Lauren took a trip to Italy that they thought might afford a final playing opportunity, but instead gave them an idea for a business. The Teahens had a memorable time at a wine tasting bar in Chianti, and decided to open their own establishment, Sorso. We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Teahen about his decision to play in Italy.
What was your reaction when Padua contacted you?

We assessed it for the family. I wasn’t really just sitting at home with Sorso and the family! We didn’t really think we could do it at first.
So what made you go for it?

We had a charity event that hadn’t gone exactly as expected. After the charity event had wrapped, we had a lunch that turned into dinner and over the course of the day we talked to everyone we needed to cover us in our absence. Everything we thought would restrict us ended up sorting it out.

You’ve played everywhere from Alaska to Toronto and across the US. How do you think that will help you cope with the move to Italy?

I’ve been able to play in so many different time zones, I’ll use stuff I’ve learned in every stop to make the adjustment smooth. The great thing about baseball is that it is a game of adjustment, and my ability to adjust will help out.
You’ve played for Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Did you consider it for the upcoming tournament?
Canada does a good job developing their young guys, so they don’t really look for that many players to fill out the roster. I did see a couple of older guys [Eric Gagné and Ryan Dempster] were on the roster. I missed the last tournament [in 2013] as I was trying to make it on to a roster.
How do you feel like your time away from the game has affected your approach to baseball?

I’ve been staying in shape, but not in baseball shape. Today I’ll take groundballs, tomorrow I’ll hit, and so on. Just taking it slowly. Once I get back into playing games, it will all come naturally.
Marco [Flores d’Arcais, Padoua’s Vice President] suggested you’d be playing mostly first base or third base. Have you talked them about it? Any preference?

I talked to them a bit, and I kind of have every glove. I look forward to playing third base as it was my original position. I can still play corner outfield.
What are spring training plans?

We’re going over mid-march, and the first game is mid-April. We’ll go over and get comfortable. I don’t fully know the spring schedule. I’m assuming it won’t be quite as intense, not as long.

Play Global! Eastern Cape Baseball Initiative

Coach Anthony Bennett’s home for the next two months will be in East London, South Africa. He’s representing Play Global and leading our Eastern Cape Baseball Initiative. Through this project, Coach Bennett will introduce baseball to kids at four schools in the region. He will also train local coaches. The goal is to get more kids playing baseball in South Africa, while training the new coaches to be positive leaders who carry the program forward.

Our partners at the South African Baseball Union identified the Eastern Cape as an area that has had little experience with baseball, one where the sport can make a great impact.

“When I was in the area a few years back,” says Play Global’s Tom Gillespie, “the enthusiasm amongst the players and teachers stuck with me. I believe they will take the sport and run with it – not because they are die-hard baseball people, but because they appreciate the lessons and opportunities provided by the sport.”

Currently living and coaching in Indonesia, Coach Bennett has a wealth of international experience. He is the bench coach for the Australian National Baseball Team, and has coached in the Netherlands, Hungary, Switzerland, among others. He also played professionally in Japan, the Czech Republic, and the US Independent League.

The Eastern Cape Baseball Initiative is funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department and by supporters like you.

WBSC President welcomes India’s first-ever Baseball Stadium

Lausanne, Switzerland – World Baseball Softball Confederation President Riccardo Fraccari today welcomed news that the construction of India’s first-ever baseball stadium has been completed near the Gurgoan-Delhi border, as reported by The Times of India. The first-ever baseball game at the new venue was played on Sunday (5 February) and was attended by Canada’s High Commissioner in India, Nadir Patel.

“The game is once again gaining momentum especially in Asia and is also being included in the next Olympics,” Patel told Indian Sports News. “WBSC fully recognizes and welcomes the ongoing efforts of the dedicated individuals and organizations in our sport who are helping to grow baseball/softball globally,” said Fraccari. “Due to such worldwide development efforts, access to baseball and softball continues to expand, helping to bring the sport to new players and fans in emerging baseball territories”.

The planning and launch of the new baseball field in India was an initiative of a local group, ‘Grand Slam Baseball’, together with Major League Baseball. Grand Slam Baseball is aiming to help extend baseball’s reach to India’s youth, while helping to raise the profile of the sport across the nation.

According to the latest data, the number of people playing baseball and softball has risen to approximately 80,000 people. With growing participation levels, efforts are also being concentrated on the development of coaches in India. Ten coaches in New Delhi recently completed a week-long development programme offered by local group ‘Play Global’, while MLB will be offering instruction to an additional 20 coaches.

Baseball continues to see a wave of global developments in high-potential territories, as the Pakistan government also recently announced it would support the growth of baseball both in Pakistan and internationally.

The Men’s National Baseball Team of India, who are ranked No. 61 in the world, will travel to Pakistan later this month to compete in the XIII West Asia Baseball Cup 2017.

MLB plans to test new extra-innings rules in rookie ball

Major League Baseball plans on testing a rule change in the lowest levels of the minor leagues this season that automatically would place a runner on second base at the start of extra innings, a distinct break from the game’s orthodoxy that nonetheless has wide-ranging support at the highest levels of the league, sources familiar with the plan told Yahoo Sports.
A derivation of the rule has been used in international baseball for nearly a decade and will be implemented in the World Baseball Classic this spring. MLB’s desire to test it in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League and Arizona League this summer is part of an effort to understand its wide in-game consequences – and whether its implementation at higher levels, and even the major leagues, may be warranted.
“Let’s see what it looks like,” said Joe Torre, the longtime major league manager who’s now MLB’s Chief Baseball Officer and a strong proponent of the testing. “It’s baseball. I’m just trying to get back to that, where this is the game that people come to watch. It doesn’t mean you’re going to score. You’re just trying to play baseball.”
While the specifics of the rule are not final, the current plan is to start with a runner on second base in the 10th and every inning thereafter. As baseball grapples with ways to increase action in a game with a record-low rate of balls in play, changing its extra-innings rules emerged as a solution with multiple potential benefits.
The minor leagues are typically MLB’s testing ground for potential rule changes, and as commissioner Rob Manfred focuses on pace-of-play issues, the prospect of extra innings with more action is appealing. The possibility of playing under different rules in extra innings – both the NFL and NHL do so in their overtime periods – is real enough that MLB sought feedback from both its playing rules and competition committees this offseason, according to sources. Even if it is a success, it would likely take years for the major leagues to adopt the changes.

Clemens Cichocki is a new U-23 coach

From the beginning of this year Clemens Cichocki is going to be a new coach of the Austrian U-23 National Team, which will form the basis for the Austrian national baseball team in the future.
Clemens was born in Wiener Neustadt and his baseball career began in team «Diving Ducks». Then he worked with other Austrian clubs, such as the «Vienna Wanderers», where he won his first Austrian Champion title in 2009. While he was studying in college in Arizona, 32-year-old athlete was playing for a professional contract in the winter league. Now Clemens is a head coach of the «Hard Bulls», with whom he made his way to the Austrian Baseball League (ABL) and brought the club back into the Major League. For many years the athlete is also been an essential part of the senior national team. In 2016 Clemens attended the world championship U-23 in Monterrey (Mexico) as an assistant coach.

This year you are going to be a head coach U-23 team. What does this work mean to you
Firstly, it is a great honor for me to get this position. This is similar to the situation as if the player was honored to represent his country. I am extremely pleased to work with these young talents – they are already one step away from getting into the national team.
You were an assistant coach U-23 team at the World Championship in October 2016. What are your impressions?
Oh, they are very positive! It was my first World Cup and I may say that these championships are definitely worth visiting them. Of course, I hope it was not my last one and I will be going to do everything possible to get there again and feel this one more time. Unfortunately, a few things have not worked out for us as we would like. It was a little disappointing that we did not get any wins, but we always have to move forward. Ferdinand Obed’s Homerun has become legendary. Of course, this was not enough for victory but then I realized: we are here and it is cool, what else is needed? The team felt the same and had shown a good game. This experience energized us for further development and winning, so I can not wait to see our future achievements.
The U-23 Championship is a great event. What plans do you have for your team?
Now we have to use all that energy from Mexico. It became clear to everyone that now we have to work hard, eliminate the weaknesses, enhance strengths and raise the bar. I wish our team to be the most prepared at the championship.
Christian Tomsich, Matthias Scheicher und Hiroyuki Sakanashi will assist you at the U-23 Championship. What will be your responsibilities for the Coaching Staff?
Christian Tomsich, as we all know, has an incredible amount of baseball experience at the highest level and a huge passion for baseball, especially the Austrian. First of all, he will be responsible for the pitchers. Matthias Scheicher is the youngest in the coaching staff and he will take the sports training and will train our first base players. In recent years Hiroyuki Sakanashi has got not only the Champion title with “Wanderers”, but also he has led the U-23 team at the World Cup in Mexico and has achieved a great success with the players of the National team as a head coach. He will train the offensive players and will support me by sharing his experience of head coach U-23. We are going to work closely and coordinate all training program. I am so proud to work with these three professionals
How should the team develop in the long-term perspective?
Now we are talking about our wins. First of all, we have to prepare the players for wining in the adult team. I think that in the long-term perspective our goal should be to get into the Top 5 in Europe.
What do you wish your players this year?
I wish they raised the bar, looked forward, set big goals, held their ardor and gave their best on the field.

Dummy Willie. The history of the deaf cobbler who made baseball America’s best game

William Hoy got his Diploma of the best school graduate in absolute silence. He could not hear his own footsteps, noise from the streets, rustling gown. The rest of the students applauded him and if Hoy knew how applause sounds, he would have fun with these non-simultaneous claps – his classmates were also deaf and could not clap synchronouslyTheir whole life was made from gestures, facial expressions and touches – the brain which was deprived of hearing, far better worked with imaginative thinking.
He was three years old when meningitis left William deaf and since that moment he has to communicate with the world only through symbols. Hoy was not dumb, but he could not speak because all he had heard up to 3 years, gradually faded and were replaced by signs that Will had learned at school for deaf. Then he simplified and improved them so his parents, friends, neighbors could communicate with the boy without words. In the course of time the whole class started to use his signs.
After graduation his Diploma with Honors flew into the cabinet – it was clear that the real words are difficult to replace by the signs even if you could use them pretty good. That is why a deaf guy from the American province by the end of XIX century could not even dream of a successful career. Much better was to find some profession where hands and brains are needed. Will become a cobbler.
Everyone knew Hoy: Hancock, Ohio consisted of a little more than ten thousand people, so the shoe master, as well as the barber, the doctor and the undertaker never left without work and contacts. But first of all Will was known as the best baseball player. People in the stands yelled and supported Hoy while he had been stealing another one base or been hitting a tricky kick. At the same time a baseball player could hear only the silence.
But he does not care about that. The only thing that prevented Will – inability to communicate with partners. Sometimes he could play without having any idea about the score. He did not hear announcements. He was fascinated only by the mechanical functions.
Cold-blooded athlete-shoemaker became a local celebrity. People come specifically to look at him, including agents of professional teams. After one game, “Oshkosh” team manager somehow explained to the deaf that he was invited to a professional club. Hoy took a couple of days to think about, and once his shoe shop did not open and at the “Oshkosh” training camp appeared a newcomer.
Hoy was playing in his first professional club for 2 years. He showed the results that were pretty high even for a healthy person: Will was incredible in defense, run perfectly and was unbelievable in base stealing. The only negative was the fact that he absolutely could not communicate with partners on the field so someone called him Dummy behind his back. Partners and fans called Will in that way all the time and were not even aware that Hoy could understand them by reading lips.
William Hoy was a universal baseball player that is still a rarity. In his first professional season, he became the leader on two main factors: the largest number of the stolen bases and he has become the second by walk. Because of his incredible speed Will put most of his records – after 55 years since the death Hoy still at the 17th place among the best base stealers in US history.
From 1890 to 1893 Will changed three clubs and in 1894 he got into the main club in his life – “Cincinnati Reds”. The new team fought only for the championship and deafness prevented Hoy to use his capabilities to the maximum. Then all players along with the general had stayed after the trainings and matches manager for several weeks till they created a system of signs which could help them with the deafness barrier.
In the first game under the new system “Cincinnati” got the victory and Hoy was the star of the match. The game had certain symbols already, but the new system has become a sensation and a breakthrough. Other teams were trying to use these signs, but they were still not so good as “Cincinnati” – they had no players with such a good skill as Dummy Willie has. Even judges started to use the signs of the first professional deaf baseball player.
Over the past 122 years the system repeatedly improved and supplemented – in every match players and judges usually send over a thousand silent signals, but the basic gestures have not changed since the triumph of William Hoy.
The Dummy played 14 seasons in the National Baseball League – the predecessor of MLB, set a few dozen records, entered into numerous tops. In the final season of his career awaited historical confrontation: Dummy Willie from “Cincinnati” faced with Dummy Taylor from the “New York Giants”. It was the first time when two deaf professionals have played against each other.
Even in longevity Hoy set a record – he died at the age of 99 in 1961 and utill 1973 was the main long-lived baseball player. Now he is on the 13th line. His ashes scattered by the family traditions, but Will still goes out on the field and makes the next home run every time as some players use gestures that made baseball more perfect game nearly half a century ago.

The “BioTexCom” team is not ready to rest! The national champions practices for 2017 season

The “BioTexCom” baseball club (Kropyvnytskyi city) has successfully finished 2016 season. Team became the Champion of Ukraine, and also won the Cup of Ukraine. Ukrainian baseball players get used to such victories as “BioTexCom” team is 21-times champion of Ukraine and repeated winner of Ukrainian Cup. The team always confidently moves to the main sport goals. Even when it doesn’t work as they wish. The lack of money for participation in international competitions and decent sport arena for preparation to the championships on appropriate level are the main obstacles of Ukrainian baseball players.
Despite these difficulties, men with strong character and professional skills have succeeded significant goals. That’s probably why they were noticed by an influential sponsor. Nowadays the baseball club is sponsored by the Kiev center for human reproduction. Owing to the sponsor support, last year players were able to participate in the competition that took place in France. Also, equipment of the field which will meet all necessary requirements is currently being negotiated. The field is located in Kropyvnytskyi city from which “BioTexCom” team is. Now this field is not very suitable for professional baseball playing. And the team’s sponsor aimed to provide baseball players with decent playing field for games and trainings, which will help to organize games of high levels.
At the present time, athletes have been preparing for the 2017 season. This spring they will take the field to play for new victories. Meanwhile in winter baseball players don’t waste their time. The athletes have regular trainings in sport gym where they practice endurance and technique. All members of “BioTexCom” team are faithfully working and improving their skills in order to play better in 2017 season. The team is reliant on its sponsor. The coaches and players are preparing for games of European level.
The 2016 was the one more year which had come to the baseball history. Year was quite difficult both in economical and psychological aspects (the war is still going in the east of Ukraine). Nevertheless, all the domestic and international competitions were hold due to sponsors support and insistence of athletes and coaches.
There was also historical victory in 2016 when the Ukrainian U-21 baseball team won gold medals for the first time participating in the European Championship (Tel Aviv, Israel). Such moments give force and desire to move only forward. This is exactly what “BioTexCom” team-champion has been doing.

Baseball in Crimea is the Cubans’ merit

The history of Crimean baseball originates from 1987, when the “Foton” team was created. The Head of the Educational and Sport Department of the Crimean Sport Committee, Vitaliy Suhachev was engaged in the development of this exotic game, as previously baseball was included in the Olympic Games program. Cuban and Nicaraguan students of the Crimean universities became the first team coaches.
– I accidently took “Cuba” magazine, where I saw interesting article about baseball – honored baseball coach of Ukraine, Rold Sidamoyidze, says. – Then I got the idea. I went to the Agriculture Institute in Simferopol and addressed Cuban students, who studied there. Seven Cubans at once took beats and gloves, when I told them I want to create a baseball team. In the Soviet Union I was the only one who had players from Cuba. They had shown us the basic elements of this game and managed to involve our sportsmen.
The first “Foton” team included students and graduates of the Simferopol Institutes. Most of them were the former handball players. These Cubans not only taught us the basic elements of the game and ability to think in each game episode, but they also helped us with sport equipment. Ronald Sidamoyidze reached an agreement with factory, which produced the aluminum beats for the team. Even sport uniform was a kind of experiment. Straw hats were bought in toy store and were recolored. When representative of the Ukrainian diaspora, Paul Kulchitskiy had arrived from Toronto he appreciated sport skills of athletes but he was also disappointed that our hats were hand-made… He immediately bought the real sport form for our players.
From “Foton” to “Skifs”
Results were not long in coming. The “Foton” team became the winner of the Ukrainian Cup in three months after its creation. In 1988 team’s list has already entrenched and players have managed to become silver medalists of the Ukrainian Championship and the finalists of the Cup once again. At the same time Arkadiy Dimidenko became the Head of the Baseball Federation of the Crimea.  Since 1996 this position is headed by Genadiy Babenko.
1990 was the best year in the history of “Foton” team. The team has won bronze medals and received the title of the URRS champions, which made them possible to participate in URRS Cup Final. Also the team became the winner of the Ukrainian Summer Games. Three teams from Simferopol have already presented themselves in 1993, during the Ukrainian Championship. These teams became the basis of the Simferopol National Team, which in 1997 won the first international tournament in Austria.
The new generation of baseball players has already appeared in the ХХI century. The main basis of “Skifs” team was students of the University of the Economy and Management. The main team roster and youth team were multiple winners of the country. Only players from Kropyvnytskyi city always went stride.
– Kropyvnytskyi city can be called a Mecca of Ukrainian baseball – player of “Foton” team Olexander Bilokurenko says.
– They have an excellent field and their sponsor in the person of “BioTexCom” clinic is rather powerful. And we even haven’t own field since URRS times until 2010.
Nowadays the team has good field. It was built at the expanses of athletes and sponsors. But, still, most often athletes pay for away games from own pocket. Sometimes part of expanses is taken by the authorities of the country or republic.
