“The Numbers Game” by Alan Schwarz

The Numbers Game: Baseball’s Lifelong Fascination with Statistics” (2004) by Alan Schwarz is a non-fiction book about statistics in baseball.
Most baseball fans, players and even team executives assume that the National Pastime’s infatuation with statistics is simply a byproduct of the information age, a phenomenon that blossomed only after the arrival of Bill James and computers in the 1980s. They couldn’t be more wrong.
In this unprecedented new book, Alan Schwarz – whom bestselling Moneyball author Michael Lewis calls “one of today’s best baseball journalists” – provides the first-ever history of baseball statistics, showing how baseball and its numbers have been inseparable ever since the pastime’s birth in 1845. He tells the history of this obsession through the lives of the people who felt it most: Henry Chadwick, the 19th-century writer who invented the first box score and harped endlessly about which statistics mattered and which did not; Allan Roth, Branch Rickey’s right-hand numbers man with the late-1940s Brooklyn Dodgers; Earnshaw Cook, a scientist and Manhattan Project veteran who retired to pursue inventing the perfect baseball statistic; John Dewan, a former Strat-O-Matic maven who built STATS Inc. into a multimillion-dollar powerhouse for statistics over the Internet; and dozens more.
Almost every baseball fan for 150 years has been drawn to the game by its statistics, whether through newspaper box scores, the backs of Topps baseball cards, The Baseball Encyclopedia, or fantasy leagues. Today’s most ardent stat scientists, known as “sabermetricians,” spend hundreds of hours coming up with new ways to capture the game in numbers, and engage in holy wars over which statistics are best. Some of these men – and women – are even being hired by major league teams to bring an understanding of statistics to a sport that for so long shunned it.
Taken together, Schwarz paints a history not just of baseball statistics, but of the soul of the sport itself. The Numbers Game will be an invaluable part of any fan’s library and go down as one of the sport’s classic books.
Named as ESPN’s 2004 Baseball Book of the Year and Mike Lupica, New York Daily News said: “Alan Schwarz turns the numbers of baseball into musical notes. He makes you understand them, he makes you care about them, and in the end, he makes you share his passion for them.”

Baseball`s Last Hero

The American film studio “Legendary Pictures” has decided to tell the world a life story of the legendary baseball player from Puerto Rico Roberto Clemente who was a real role model, both inside and outside baseball field. The as-yet-unnamed biological drama will be based on the book “The Passion and Grace of Baseball`s Last Hero” which was written by the winner of the Pulitzer Prize David Maraniss.

Clemente was born in the barrio of San Aton, Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934. Since young age, Roberto helped his father at the sugar factory who was working there in order to provide for seven children. The boy spent all his free time on the baseball diamonds. Being a teenager Clemente was invited to play in one of the baseball teams of the amateur league.

Roberto signed his first professional baseball contract when he was 18 years. He quickly had become one of the key players in his baseball team and draw attention of baseball scouts from the USA. He made his major league debut in 1955. Two times he became the champion of the World Series during 18 seasons with “Pittsburg Pirates”. He participated in the Major League Baseball All-Star Games fifteen times.

Despite great fees and growing popularity, Roberto managed to avoid star sickness. During off-season, Clemente was actively engaged in charity. Roberto also couldn`t stand aside when a strong earthquake was in Managua (December 1972). He organized the delivery of basic consumer goods to Nicaragua. However, soon Roberto found out that three cargos stuck in the way and couldn’t reach its destination. Then the famous baseball player leased a private plane in order to hand over humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake.

Shortly after the take-off the engine of the aircraft had failed and the plane crashed into the water. Body of the famous player wasn’t found. In the spring of the next year, Roberto Clemente was posthumously included to the Baseball Hall of Fame and was awarded by the Congressional Gold Medal. The annual MLB award, which is given for outstanding game results and significant contribution to the community activities, was called by the name of Roberto Clemente.

The American poet and literary critic Rowan Ricardo Phillips will work on the adaptation of the Maraniss`s book. The director`s chair of the movie will be entrusted to Ezra Edelman who won “Oscar” and “Emmy” awards last year for the work on famous documentary “O.J.: Made in America”.

61* (2001)

“61*” is a 2001 American sports drama film written by Hank Steinberg and directed by Billy Crystal. It stars Barry Pepper as Roger Maris and Thomas Jane as Mickey Mantle on their quest to break Babe Ruth’s record.

Noted baseball fan Billy Crystal directed this made-for-cable drama set in the summer of 1961, as two of the strongest hitters in the major leagues, Mickey Mantle (Thomas Jane) and Roger Maris (Barry Pepper), find themselves neck and neck in a battle to break Babe Ruth’s long-standing record for most home runs in a season.

Both men were playing for the New York Yankees at the time, and as the two men came within grasping distance of Ruth’s record, their loyalty as friends and teammates was put to the ultimate test.

Mickey’s life off the field is taking a toll on his playing. He drinks, enjoys the Manhattan nightlife and arrives at the ballpark hung over. New York’s fans and media pull for the popular and personable Mantle, a long-time Yankee. The quieter Maris is viewed as an outsider, aloof and unworthy.

It appears Mantle is not going to make it; his health deteriorates and he plays in constant pain. Maris, meanwhile, is unaccustomed to such a high level of public scrutiny and is uncomfortable interacting with the media, who dissect and distort everything he says or does.

Chronic injury and alcohol abuse catch up with Mantle, and an ill-advised injection by a doctor infects his hip and lands him in a hospital bed. With Mantle gone from the lineup, the stage becomes set for Maris. He made the record-breaking 61st home run during the final game of the season.

“BASEBALL: An Illustrated History” by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns

“BASEBALL: An Illustrated History” it is a companion volume to Ken Burns’s magnificent PBS television series – updated and expanded to coincide with the broadcast of a new, two-part Tenth Inning.
The authors of the acclaimed and best-selling The Civil War, Jazz, and The War turn to another uniquely American phenomenon: baseball. A magnificent, exhaustively researched chronicle in words and pictures of nation’s pastime, and how it came to be what it is.
Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns’s moving and fascinating history of the game goes beyond stolen bases, double plays, and home runs to demonstrate how baseball has been influenced by, and has in turn influenced, American life: politics, race, labor, big business, advertising, social custom, literature, art, and morality. The book covers every milestone of the game: from the rules to the eight-month players’ strike of 1994; from the 1924 Negro World Series to Jack Roosevelt Robinson’s major-league debut. This new edition brings the authors’ monumental work into the twenty-first century: steroids, home-run records, the rise of Latino players, the long-awaited Red Sox World Series victory, and so much more.
Ten essays by notable baseball enthusiasts, exploring their individual preoccupations with the game, complement this sweeping narrative. And a wealth of pictures document baseball’s evolution since the mid-nineteenth century and bring to life its most memorable figures.

Bull Durham (1988)

“Bull Durham” is a 1988 American romantic comedy sports film. It is partly based upon the minor-league baseball experiences of writer/director Ron Shelton and depicts the players and fans of the Durham Bulls, a minor-league baseball team in Durham, North Carolina.

Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) is a perennial Minor Leaguer assigned to the Durham Bulls, a hapless team with a long tradition of mediocrity. There he tutors a young, dim-witted pitching prodigy, Nuke LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) in the ways of baseball, life, and love. Each strikes up a romance with Annie (Susan Sarandon), the team's "mascot" who takes it upon herself to sleep with a new player every season.

Each has his/her own conflict: Crash struggles to end his career with some measure of dignity; Nuke struggles to make it to the "big show"; and Annie struggles to find something more than a roll in the hay and of course, Crash and Nuke come into conflict over Annie's affections to further complicate matters. The film treats the sport of baseball with a sort of casual reverence, highlighting both the drama and the humor inherent in the game, illustrated by Annie's numerous references to baseball as “her religion”.

Bull Durham was a commercial success, grossing over $50 million in North America, well above its estimated budget, and was a critical success as well. Sports Illustrated ranked it the #1 Greatest Sports Movie of all time. In addition, the film is ranked #55 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies." It is also ranked #97 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Laughs" list, and #1 on Rotten Tomatoes' list of the 53 best-reviewed sports movies of all time.

“Cleveland Indians” will stop using Chief Wahoo logo

The “Cleveland Indians” announced they are dropping the Chief Wahoo logo, which represented the team during the last 70 years.
For the last few years, the Native American organizations see the symbol as offensive and have been called for a change in logo. Thus the MLB commissioner pressed Rob Manfred, head of the Cleveland Indians to remove Chief Wahoo.
Activists also suggested changing name of the team removing the word “Indians”, but so far this initiative has not been supported. The logo will come off the team’s jerseys and stadium starting with the 2019 season. However, the club will still sell merchandise featuring the mascots.
Earlier, the opponents of the “Indians” symbolic filed a lawsuit against the club, finding racist traits in the attributes of the club, but none was successful.
The law also took the side of the baseball club, when activists demanded to ban the nickname “Redskins” for football players from “Washington” team.
