Baseball – a growing sport in Malta
Baseball may be America’s national pastime, the number one sport in Cuba, Japan, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, growing rapidly in Australia, Asia, Central America and Europe but it just may be perfect for Malta.
Apart from having the ideal climate for baseball, Malta boasts the luxury of having many returned migrants from North America and Australia, who have played the game at a relatively high level and are working to help it grow.
At the moment, baseball is one of the quickest growing sports in Malta and Gozo as there are three separate leagues for youths organized and run by the Malta Association of Baseball.
There is also a National League which has developed some players who are capable of competing at the highest European levels. The senior league members are very culturally diverse, as there are players with Australian, Canadian, American, German, and Yugoslav and, of course, Maltese backgrounds.
The focus on youth baseball in Malta in recent years has led to the growing popularity of the sport.
The youth leagues, along with the SkolaSport programs, have led to over 100 youths being involved in organized baseball under the watchful eye of the association over the past two years.
Furthermore, this youth baseball is quashing the misconception that baseball is only a game played by returned migrants as over 95 per cent of the youth players are Maltese and have spent their whole lives here.
Evidence of the growth of baseball can be further solidified by the strong showing the national team has put in over the past two years in their annual trip to Italy.
The team returned home with victories in both of their last two trips which saw them beating the PaternĂ² Warriors and San Giorgio. Both sides are semi-professionals and compete at the highest levels of Italian baseball, and are among the elite club teams in Europe.
With the recent success of the Malta rugby and waterpolo national teams, it looks as if yet another relatively new sport has the ability to bloom.
Today, the association will be kicking off its 10th season. An exhibition game will take place in Kercem, Gozo, between 2002 champions Gozo Tornadoes and a ‘Rest of the League’ selection.
Players, officials and friends are then set to meet at Il-Girna Restaurant in Sannat for a social activity during which the senior league awards will be distributed to the various winners.

How to deal with baseball bat?
Baseball game is talked about very often and rather
much: there are many articles in the Internet, computer games, and movies and so
on. At first sight, this game is rather easy and has no complications: throw
ball – return ball. However, it is common mistake among baseball beginners. Under
visual simplicity one can find high class of players, as well as hard work they
carry out on the training grounds. In this article, we try to understand how to
deal with baseball bat correctly.
So let's start:
• Firstly, you have to take up necessary position and needed
pose. See carefully after position of your feet, they must be parallel to
shoulders.
• Now you need to connect fingers’ bones, you need to
keep the bat over shoulders so that it does not sag.
• Do not hold your muscles in tense, they must be rather
relaxed, otherwise you will circling the drain.
• Your back leg must be fixed and you do not have to
move it until backswing.
• As soon as you notice pitcher's move, immediately
turn your hips, thus you will displace the weight back and then march hands back.
• After pitcher’s throw immediately start to move, you
should make a little step forward, increasing your striking force. As a result,
it will be seen whether ball is reflected, or it will strike.
• Once you have decided you can hit the ball, start backswing.
You need to control the situation, watch how the bat hits the ball. Backswing ends
when your hips are turned toward pitcher. And here is stroke!
It seems to be simple enough, if properly follow given
instructions, but here are a few recommendations to conduct action correctly:
• You should not move the body until stroke.
• Stand-by on back leg helps to strengthen stroke. It
is also important to remember bad muscles’ flex can cause muscle pain,
therefore, pay appropriate attention to your training and muscles’ flex.
• Use bat that meet your weight, try to hit the ball
as strong as it’s possible.
• Wear cotton gloves before ball return, thus you will
reduce vibration.
• There are no specific advices on how to locate the
knuckles on bat. Experts discord so choose position that will be the most
convenient just for you.
It must be also noted some important moments to
consider during stroke:
Monitor the location of your hands; they should be on
the bat during the whole process of strike. Some people move one hand down
during backswing. It is wrong action as it
reduces force of stroke, and increases vibration.
And do not forget to flex muscles because you can
cause serious trauma ignoring muscles’ flex before the game.
In conclusion, it can be said if you follow these
recommendations, soon you'll be able to deal well with baseball bat.
Kinheim withdraws from Dutch Hoofdklasse
Kinheim shocked Dutch Baseball on Monday when they announced through a press release that they are withdrawing from the Dutch Hoofdklasse. As main reason they cite player departures and the non-ability to field a Hoofdklasse worthy team for the 2017 season.
Apparently Kinheim already informed the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) two weeks ago about their decision. Afterwards they made a last-minute push, but on Monday informed the KNBSB that they indeed withdraw. They hope to return to the Hoofdklasse in the future.
The 2017 Hoofdklasse will start with seven teams, as no second division team is willing to take the open spot on short notice. Kinheim won the Holland Series five times, lastly in 2012.
