The Ukrainian Baseball Championship 2018 is currently in progress. Matches are held in Ukrainian cities, and local teams show their best results.

Borgerhout Squirrels won the CEB Cup 2018 tournament!

The Borgerhout Squirrels defeated the Bonn Capitals 2-0 in the final of the 2018 CEB Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

It was their third win at the club tournament in European Baseball in three straight seasons. They defeated a strong German team thanks to stellar pitching of Kenny van den Branden and former Major Leaguer Romulo Sanchez.

Arrows Ostrava finished in third place ahead of the Templiers Senart after an 8-0 shutout in the bronze medal game. BioTexCom-KNTU prevailed 5-4 over the Olimpija Karlovac, sending Croatia to the Federations Cup.

Curacao Neptunus defended the Title of the European Champions!

Curacao Neptunus has defended its title at the European Champions Cup 2018 in Rotterdam.

At their home stadium they shut out ASD Rimini 5-0. On offense Shaldimar Daantji and Quintin De Cuba hit home runs. Curacao Neptunus remained undefeated in the tournament.

Unipol Bologna finished in third place ahead of Rouen Huskies, Draci Brno and the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe (both fifth). L&D Amsterdam beat T&A San Marino in the relegation game, meaning San Marino has to start in the CEB Cup next year. Their spot will be taken by Belgium, which won it thanks to Borgerhout Squirrels’ win at the CEB Cup in Ostrava.

Ukrainians in the Top European Prospects

A pair of 18-year old Ukrainian teammates got into the list of top prospects of the European championship U23.

They are Heorhii (or ‘George’ in English) Gvritishvili and Vlad Kosenko from BioTexCom-KNTU team. The championship was held from 7th to 13th of August in Czech Republic.

During the tournament George Gvritishvili was one of the tournaments leading hitters while playing right field and pitching. Like his outfield mate, Vladyslav Kosenko appeared in the 2012 Under-15 World Cup for Ukraine. Kosenko also faired well, neither had many opportunities in the field.

European Champions Cup 2018 in Rotterdam Results Day 2, June 7, 2018

It was a memorable day at the European Champions Cup 2018 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Especially in Group A. In the morning game Owen Ozanich pitched a gem and the Rouen Huskies not only beat, but crushed L&D Amsterdam 8-1. The surprise win was followed by another upset, as the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe prevailed 3-1 over ASD Rimini with Gary Owens hitting two home runs. All four games in the pool now are tied with identical 1-1 records, which means that Friday’s first-round closers will become quarterfinal games. Rouen and Heidenheim will square off, while Rimini takes on Amsterdam. Winners will reach the semi-final.

In Group B the top two are already set. Only the order has to be determined. In the afternoon Unipol Bologna blew by league rival T&A San Marino 12-4. In the evening game Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam held off another strong but unlucky performance by Draci Brno 7-2. Bologna and Rotterdam will conclude the first round on Friday evening with a clash, which could be a potential preview for the final on Sunday.

CEB Cup 2018 in Ostrava Results Day 3, June 7, 2018

The preliminary round at the CEB Cup 2018 in Ostrava, Czech Republic ended on Thursday with four games.

In Group A the TQB had to decide the order for the qualification for the second round. BioTexCom-KNTU stunned the Bonn Capitals 10-8, while the Borgerhout Squirrels beat the Therwil Flyers 9-4. After the contest KNTU, Borgerhout and Bonn each had an identical 2-1 record. The TQB put Borgerhout in first place and Bonn in second with KNTU missing the chance to play for the final.

Bonn now will face Arrows Ostrava in the highly anticipated second semi-final on Friday evening. Ostrava improved to 3-0 with an easy 15-0 shutout over BC Minsk on Thursday. The second semi-final will be between Borgerhout and the Templiers Senart. Former big leaguer Romulo Sanchez will take the mound for the Squirrels. Senart reached second place in Group B after a crazy 20-11 win over Olimpija Karlovac.

Ukrainian players at the “MLB Academies Tournament”

The spring tournament of the European Major Leagues academies started in Sant Boi last week.

Czech Republic, Netherlands, Italy, Germany and France, as well as “European selection” team of players from European countries are among the competitors. 175 baseball players aged from 15 to 19 take part in the “MLB Academies Tournament” this year. 21 games will be played during the seven-day tournament.

It must be noted there are two Ukrainian players from the Kropyvnytskyi city among the competitors. Pitcher George Gvritishvili and catcher Viacheslav Babii became the players of the “European selection” team. Last season George has already participated in the MLB Summer Camp which took place also in Sant Boi.
