Germany avoids Sweep with 1-0 Shutout against Czech Republic

Germany avoided a sweep in their exhibition series against the Czech Republic with a 1-0 shutout win on Thursday in Regensburg.Strong pitching and a sixth-inning run was all Germany needed to prevail over the Czech squad. Game one in Heidenheim and game two in Regensburg was won 7-1 and 7-4 by the Czech Republic on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday’s matchup was a pitcher’s duel. Both teams wasted bases loaded situations early in the game. In the sixth Nici Weichert worked a one-out walk, stole second and came around to score the game-winner through Lukas Steinlein’s double. It was the lone run in a pitcher-heavy duel.
Maurice Wilhelm, Max Schmitz and Lennard Stöcklin took the mound for Germany. Schmitz struck out six consecutive batters at one point in the game and earned the win. Jan Novak took the loss, allowing five hits, a run and five walks in six innings. Ondrej Satoria relieved him in the seventh.
