Baseball at Universiade 2017 KOR, TPE rebound with lopsided wins over FRA, CZE


The baseball tournament at the 2017 Universiade in Taipei City resumed played after an off day on Monday with four first-round games on Tuesday.
After France and Czech Republic stunned favored teams on Sunday they came back to earth two days later.
France lost 0-12 in the morning against Korea. Five runs in the second and six in the seventh blew the score open. France managed just three hits in the contest by Norbert Jongerius, Jorge Hereaud and Leonel Cespedes. Cespedes also drew the start on the mound, allowing seven hits, six runs and seven walks in six innings to take the loss.
The Czech Republic dropped their game against Chinese Taipei 0-11. Five runs in the first and four in the third decided things quickly. Similar to France they also captured just three hits in the game. Arnost Dubovy, Tomas Junec and Petr Zyma reached with hits. Jan Vasourek didn’t make it out of the first, allowing five runs on six hits and a base on balls to take the loss.
The third European participant Russia played much better compared to the 0-19 blowout against Japan on Sunday, but still lost 6-10 against the United States. The US squad led 10-1 midway through the sixth, when Russia added five runs afterwards. Nikita Monakhov went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Aleksandr Tarasov took the loss, issuing three hits, two runs and three base on balls in two innings.
In the fourth game of the day Japan beat Mexico 7-2. On Wednesday the preliminary round ends with France and Czech Republic battling it out in Group A for a spot in the semifinals. Russia faces Mexico.
