U23 European Championship: Recaps, Day 1



The U23 European Championship in Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia started with eight games on Monday.

In Group A Croatia edged out Russia 2-1 behind a complete game from Antonio Horvatic. Additionally the Netherlands shut out Belarus 9-0 thanks to a combined five-hitter by Kaj Timmermans, Jerremyh Angela and Maickel Rietel.

In Group B Great Britain defeated Austria 10-0 with Nolan Bond and Miguel Rodriguez throwing seven no-hit innings. Spain beat Poland 5-1 in the second game in that pool.

In Group C Germany crushed Georgia 24-0 in the most lopsided score of the day. Germany scored 23 of its 24 runs in the first two frames. Marcel Jimenez scored four times and drove in five. France downed Slovakia 11-0 in the second game of that group.

In Group D Belgium prevailed 8-3 over Ukraine, scoring five runs in the sixth to seal the win. The Czech Republic beat Lithuania 15-0 in the evening game.
